Alan is a Registered Company Auditor and Registered Tax Agent with more than 50 years of distinguished experience in accounting, auditing, taxation, systems engineering, and strategic compliance governance. He holds CPA, CA, and MIPA designations and maintains full registration with ASIC as a Registered Company Auditor.

His professional career encompasses foundational leadership at the Byrne and Miller Group, where he graduated from the University of Technology Sydney in 1975 with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Systems Engineering and Accounting. He qualified as a Registered Company Auditor in 1977 and served as lead auditor for New South Wales Health, overseeing audits of major hospitals and critical health infrastructure until 1981.

In 1985 he was a founding partner of Byrne and Miller Sawtell, with offices established in Coffs Harbour, the Gold Coast, Gladstone, and Sydney. He became a Registered Tax Agent in 1989 and achieved full CPA membership in 1996. In 1998 he was appointed sole managing partner of the Byrne and Miller Group, directing operations principally from the West Burleigh offices on the Gold Coast.

Alan possesses extensive specialist expertise in audit compliance, trust accounting, complex taxation matters, and ATO dispute resolution. Between 2015 and 2025 he signed off on approximately 5,000 self-managed superannuation funds annually as part of the B&M Audit division.

His portfolio has included responsibility as the Registered Company Auditor for some of Australia’s largest trust accounts, real estate agencies, construction entities, registered clubs and gaming institutions, not-for-profit organisations across New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria, and numerous large strata body corporates together with their associated building management and trust accounts. He has also conducted annual audits of trust accounts for solicitors, accountants, allied professionals, and large general practitioner divisions, while maintaining a primary focus on large corporate audit engagements and high-level compliance governance.

He serves as CEO and senior mentor at SABY MGA, where he provides strategic oversight and guidance to Nitin Sabharwal and Luke Christian Miller, together with operational direction to Byrne & Miller MGA. In this capacity he continues to mentor Registered Company Auditors and aspiring Chartered Accountants through their professional qualifications and academic advancement.

Alan holds current practice certificates with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) and the Institute of Public Accountants (MIPA) and maintains non-practising membership with CPA Australia (CPA).

Alan is widely regarded as one of the industry’s most experienced and authoritative figures, underpinned by his extensive practical record, technical credentials, and sustained contributions to professional standards. He continues to consult on audit engagements to firms across the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Central and North QLD as a Registered Company Auditor and advisor.
